The plight of the orangutans, as an iconic species, has garnered widespread global attention and sympathy. This highly intelligent species, sharing approximately 97% of its DNA with humans, is endemic to Malaysia, where it is found exclusively in the states of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as to Indonesia. Recent studies estimate that approximately 15,000 orangutans reside in Sabah, while an additional 2,000 individuals have been recorded in Sarawak.

Orangutans are classified as critically endangered due to significant threats including habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and the wildlife trade.

Introduction

The Bornean Orang Utan (Pongo pygmaeus morio) is one of the sub-species of Orang Utan found only in the Borneo archipelago, specifically in Sabah and North/East Kalimantan.

Q&A

The Orang Utan Diplomacy programme aims to:

  • Raise funds through adoption programme for Orang Utan to further strengthen In-Situ conservation efforts to ensure that the Orang Utan population is more secure and grows naturally at Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA);
  • Extend ownership of the program to palm oil company participation.

The adoption fund supports Orang Utan conservation works, which include:

  • Programme on Orang Utan conservationEducational awareness program and establishing ranger / patrol unit to monitor the whereabouts, safety, and condition of the Orang Utan
  • Orang Utan habitat enrichment programme within SPnCA (tree planting, Orang Utan bridge, etc)

Adoption Packages

The adoption package are as follows:

Corporate adopter – from RM10,000 per adoption per year

Adopters will receive an exclusive adoption certificate and eligible for tax relief.
