MPOGCF recently took part in a dialogue session organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA) Johor, focusing on human-wildlife conflict, especially in oil palm plantation areas across Johor.
The session brought together industry players and government agencies, featuring two main panelists—MPOGCF General Manager Hairulazim Mahmud and Johor PERHILITAN Deputy Director Firrdhaus Mahmood.
PERHILITAN highlighted the increasing number of conflicts involving elephants and tigers, mainly due to habitat loss from land development. They also called for stronger collaboration between wildlife authorities and plantation companies, including support for efforts like the Johor Elephant Sanctuary.
MPOGCF, on the other hand, shared various ongoing efforts to reduce wildlife conflict. These include creating biodiversity-friendly plantation guidelines with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), planting Napier grass as elephant corridors, restoring forests within the Central Forest Spine, rehabilitating peatlands, and running a campaign to plant one million trees in selected areas.
The dialogue also stressed the importance of using science-based solutions and encouraging industry involvement to balance environmental sustainability with plantation development.
